Where Are You From?

America is the great melting pot.  That means, if you’re an American, originally you came from somewhere else. However you came, whenever you came, you (or, most likely, your ancestors) brought with them them the traditions of culture, which have now been sewn into a mosaic that is now the patchwork quilt of Americana.

Sometimes, the reasons why we came here are not good stories.  People came here for all sorts of reasons that are not glamorous or even voluntary.  But, despite our past, the fact is that in 2015, America is so much richer for the fact that Americans hail from every corner of the globe.

And, yet, despite the fact that we are such a rich and multilayered culture, people still seem intent on pulling that apart and segregating people by color or culture. Rather than celebrating the fact that someone is multiracial or multiethnic, they want to parse “where do you come from?” and “what are you?”

Indeed, as I’ve heard so often from my guests on the Multiracial Family Man Podcast, including my most recent interview with criminal justice advocate, Sherene Crawford (click here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/multiracial-family-man-ep./id969793342?i=340254993&mt=2) rather than being happy that someone is a beautiful blend of things, people demand to “get to the bottom of things” and pull apart and segregate the component parts.

And, that’s just really tragic.  Because in the end, the World is getting smaller. We’re all mixing and intermingling more.  And, it’s inevitable that lines will blur.  So, rather than hold onto past divisions, we all ought to be embracing future unions.
