The Top 10 Films Portraying the Melding of Black and Jewish Culture

Those of you who already read this blog or follow my comedy know that my wife is a Black woman who converted to Judaism.  What you also know is that we recently had a son, and he, thus, is Biracial and Jewish.  As a result, I can tell you that Black-Jewish relations in our family are at an all-time high.

Interestingly, we are learning all the time that our situation is increasingly common.  There are more and more interracial relationships, and there are increasing numbers of people who are Black and Jewish (either by choice, such as is the case with my wife) or by birth (as is the case with our son).

To us, it’s a great thing, this blending of cultures, this stirring together of African-American and American Jewish culture.

Because of this, we’d like to see it captured in popular culture more frequently and more prominently.  So, now, I’m suggesting 10 movies I’d like to see made that would represent the melding of Black and Jewish in one family:

1.  Madea Goes to Synagogue

2.  These Chitlins’ Ain’t Kosher

3.  Meet the Brownsteins

4.  Toni Childs and Todd Garrett: The Movie

5.   Jump the Broom and Step on the Glass

6.  Big Bubbe’s House

7.  The Family That Preys on Saturdays

8.  Hebrew School Daze

9.  Hannah and Her Sistahs

10. Uptown Saturday Night (But Only After Sundown)

And, of course, the 2 documentaries:

1.  “Lenny Kravitz and Slash: The Lost Bar Mitzvah Jam Tapes.”

2.  “Good Hair and Sidecurls: The Story of Chasids With Weaves”

Funny post! I know the movie “Corrina, Corrina” with Whoopie Goldberg and Ray Liotta has the black/Jewish relationship dynamic.

Excellent reach back into the past. Was a good movie. But, I’m gonna give it honorable mention status, not quite top 10 🙂
