Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It is a day on which we honor the work of Dr. King and so many others who fought and continue to fight for civil rights and equality for all.
Our family is a multiracial one. I am White and Jewish. My wife is Black and converted to Judaism. And, our son is Biracial and being raised as a Jewish person. For us, and for so many other multiracial families, the Dr. King holiday has special meaning. It is a day on which we reflect on race and issues of racism that we face as well as racial dynamics within our families. For more on my thoughts on being the White dad of a Black son, please see this article I wrote recently: http://goodmenproject.com/featured-content/white-dads-thoughts-raising-black-son-racism-mlk-kerj/.
Beyond that, though it’s a day when we also celebrate the progress that has been made in race relations. We should not forget how much work still is to be done, but let us not forget the strides that have been made. We are still very much within the Age of Obama, and that, in and of itself, shows just how far we’ve come as a people.
So, as we celebrate this holiday, we want to hear from you. How did you celebrate MLK Day? What do you see as the positive developments regarding race in America and the World? How do people surprise you in a positive way when it comes to race?
