A new movie about Mildred and Richard Loving will be filmed in Virginia. For those not familiar with their story, Mildred and Richard Loving were an interracial couple. She was Black. He was White. And, they were arrested, convicted and sentenced to a year in prison for violating the laws then on the books in Virginia preventing people of different races from marrying.
The Lovings then challenged their conviction all the way to the Supreme Court, which then issued the landmark decision Loving v. Virginia, in which the Court unanimously held that such laws were unconstitutional.
In the years since the Supreme Court’s ruling in 1967, interracial marriage has increased and continues to increase in frequency. And, attitudes about interracial marriage have continued to improve for the better.
Yet, there are those who still, today, oppose interracial marriage, multiracial families, and all that the Lovings fought so very hard for. And, this means that we, especially, those of us in multiracial families have to keep fighting the good fight. So, here are a couple of things you can do to keep moving the ball forward:
1. Go to Lovingday.org and show your support
2. Go see the Loving movie when it comes out (or, at the very least, “on demand” it)
3. Read about the Lovings (at least read the Wikipedia page) and share that with your kids.
And, finally, of course, you could hug and kiss someone of a different race . . . though you should definitely ask permission first 🙂
