As everyone knows (or as everyone should know), February is Black History Month. As an interracial family, it’s important to us that our biracial son, Ivan, learn about his African/African-American roots.
So, of course, we decided the job should fall to me, Ivan’s White dad, to be in charge of the Black History Month commemorations. And, I have risen to the occasion. I have done my research and come up with some key facts about Black people and the African-American experience that are little known, but which are critical for Ivan to know so he can understand and appreciate his heritage. Here they are:
1. Black people are not actually Black. If you look carefully, most actually have skin that is Brown in color.
2. – 9. [Deleted by the Network Censors due to their political correctness]
10. White guys who wear baggy pants, sideways-turned baseball caps and who stand in suburban strip malls pretending to rap are not Black no matter how much they think they are.
Now, I’ll be honest, this is a pretty comprehensive list. There’s a lot of information for Ivan to digest, but I’m confident in his intellect, and his ability to understand nuance.
Meantime, if Ivan (or you) want to know more about Black History Month and commemorations thereof, make sure to check out the President’s State of the Union tomorrow night, and also check out: http://www.africanamericanhistorymonth.gov/
Peace!
