Black-Jewish Shabbat

Written by Alex on May 8, 2015 - 0 Comments

In our Biracial Jewish household, we like to celebrate Shabbat (who doesn’t like to stop working, light candles, drink some wine and take a nap).

Some people think that it’s anomalous that our family is both Black and Jewish.  They think the the two don’t go together.

On the contrary, there are now and always have been many Jews of color.  Some would argue that Jesus was a Jew of color.

Point is, Judaism and Melanin are not polar opposites.  They go together.  Always have.  Always will.

And, if you’re looking for a little light reading on the topic, we suggest:

3. Uptown Saturday Night (But Only After Sundown): [a reboot of the famous 70s movie about a pair of unlikely Biracial Jewish friends on a night out uptown]

4. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner . . . and Bringing the Manischewitz

5. Jumping the Broom and Breaking the Glass

We hope you enjoy these.  Meantime, Shabbat Shalom!
